Here’s a new book I just stumbled across. Well, new to me, that is. The Black Lung Captain is actually book 2 in the “Tales of the Ketty Jay” series. I remember when the paperback version of book 1 (Retribution Falls) came out last year, mostly because I found the cover art intriguing. (The book 1 hardcover was first released in 2009.)
For some reason, The Black Lung Captain caught my eye and once I read the excerpt, I knew I had to post some links here. Just reading the first several pages reminded me of the now defunct, cult classic TV series Firefly, with a crew of miscreants running to their airship, away from a mob of villagers intent on stopping the desperate men who robbed the local orphanage. Here’s the opening paragraphs of The Black Lung Captain:
Darian Frey was a man who understood the value of a tactical retreat. It was a gambler’s instinct, a keen appreciation of the odds that told him when to take a risk and when to bail out. There was no shame in running as if your heels were on fire when the situation called for it. In Frey’s opinion, the only difference between a hero and a coward was the ability to do basic math.
Malvery was to his left, huffing and puffing through the undergrowth. Alcoholic, overweight, and out of shape. Pinn, who was no fitter but a good deal dimmer, ran alongside. Behind them was an outraged horde armed with rifles, pistols, and clubs, baying for their blood.
The math on this one was easy.
If you’d like more info (in addition to the link above that will take you to the excerpt), here’s the scoop:
