The Hugo-nominated Schlock Mercenary is a space opera comic strip regarding a band of mercenaries and their adventures as they travel through space. It is written and illustrated by Howard Tayler.
I found Tayler via the podcast “Writing Excuses,” which I have long been a fan of the podcast for two reasons: (1) they give solid writing advice, and (2) these guys absolutely crack me up. I know that anytime I listen to one of the 15-minute podcasts (“15 minutes long because you’re in a hurry and we’re not that smart”), I can be guaranteed a few smiles at least.
I find that the wit Tayler projects in the podcast carries into Schlock Mercenary. If you want to check it out, you can read the daily comic strip free-of-charge at http://www.schlockmercenary.com. On the site you can also find an app for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. Previous comics bound into volumes are available for purchase via the “Shop” link. The cover art for Volume 5 is shown to the right.
Howard has shown that through persistence, one can actually make a living doing what they love. As an aspiring novelist, I find that of great encouragement.
